What the Finder is actually matching

The Finder does not ask “which brand is best?” It compares the exact fields that can make one air scrubber fit a job better than another. A mold/containment selection gets more application credit for documented HEPA filtration, negative-air capability, static pressure and ducting. A construction-dust selection gives more weight to prefiltration, filter-change indication, stackability, daisy-chaining and useful airflow. An odor/smoke selection gives more credit to documented activated-carbon support.

Those application weights are not manufacturer quality scores. They are a way to translate the workflow you choose into transparent evidence. Exact hard limits such as minimum CFM, maximum amps and maximum weight are kept separate from preferences.

Verified hard conflicts can exclude a model

If you enter a 700 CFM minimum and an exact current product publishes only 550 CFM as its planning airflow, the Finder removes it. The product is not “bad”; it simply conflicts with the requirement you entered. The same rule applies to a verified per-unit amp draw above your maximum or a verified weight above your transport limit.

Unknown data is treated differently. If a manufacturer does not publish a field, the Finder lowers Data Confidence and tells you the field still needs verification. It does not convert null into zero and then reject the machine.

Required features and unknown evidence

For features such as negative-air capability, carbon support, daisy-chaining or monitoring, a verified “No” can conflict with a required setting. An unknown value does not become a hidden pass. Instead, the candidate can remain visible with lower score/confidence and a clear “verification needed” message.

That distinction is important in the current catalog. Some models publish ducting and negative-air details explicitly, while other current product pages focus on filtration and airflow and leave negative-air support unstated. The Finder should not invent compatibility from physical resemblance.

Why airflow uses a planning value

Some products publish a single rated airflow. Others publish a variable range or only a maximum. The Finder uses rated airflow when available, otherwise the current maximum published airflow. That lets it perform a consistent minimum-CFM gate while keeping the basis visible in the normalized data.

Match Score is not a universal product ranking

The same machine can score differently for two visitors because their requirements differ. A 23.6 lb XPOWER X-2480A can gain application credit for compact transport; a HEPA 700 can gain credit in a mold/containment workflow for published negative-air capability and static pressure; an X-3580 can gain credit in an odor/smoke workflow because activated carbon is included.

The score therefore answers “how well does this documented machine fit these inputs?” It does not answer “which machine is objectively best?”

Data Confidence keeps incomplete evidence visible

A strong technical fit can still have Medium or Limited Data Confidence if a field that matters to your requirements is missing. Confidence also drops when the exact normalized record carries a stored source conflict or only partial manufacturer verification.

The BlueDri AirShield 550 is a useful example of why this matters: its current manufacturer sources conflict on 500 versus 550 CFM, so the product is held from deterministic Finder use even though an exact Amazon identity exists. Commerce does not resolve an editorial data conflict.

Budget and affiliate links stay downstream of suitability

Only some current air scrubbers have retained dated price observations, and marketplace prices can change quickly. The Finder therefore does not use price as a quality score. When a dated price is available, the result can tell you whether that observation was inside the budget you entered. When price is unavailable, it says so.

Likewise, a model can rank even when no affiliate route exists. Commercial links are shown after the technical result rather than feeding the score.

How to use the shortlist without over-reading the score

Start with the top few candidates, then read the “why it fits” and “verification needed” bullets. A five-point score difference is not a universal quality gap. It can simply reflect that one model documents a preferred feature more clearly or lands closer to the exact airflow/weight constraints you entered.
