Air Scrubber vs Air Purifier: Restoration Equipment vs Room Air Cleaning
Air scrubbers and air purifiers both move air through filtration, but they are designed around different operating environments. A consumer air purifier is usually selected for ongoing room-air cleaning and is commonly compared by CADR, room size, sound and energy use. A restoration air scrubber is usually selected for jobsite airflow, filter loading, rugged transport, electrical deployment, ducting and sometimes negative-air containment.

Consumer air purifiers are commonly sized by CADR
EPA’s current Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home recommends choosing a portable air cleaner with a clean air delivery rate (CADR) large enough for the room or area. CADR is a particle-cleaning performance measure, and EPA publishes a simple room-size/CADR reference table for consumer portable air cleaners.
That is different from how most restoration air scrubbers are marketed. Restoration machines commonly publish fan airflow in CFM, electrical load, filter stages, static pressure and ducting. Those metrics are useful for jobsite planning but are not automatically the same as a standardized consumer CADR.
A restoration air scrubber is designed around jobsite abuse and logistics
Current professional units emphasize stackability, rugged housings, multiple carry points, GFCI/daisy-chain outlets, replaceable prefilters and HEPA filters, filter-change indicators and ducting. Those features make sense when the equipment travels between jobs and operates alongside dehumidifiers, air movers and tools.
A home purifier can be excellent at filtering a bedroom or living room, but it is usually not built around repeated demolition dust loading, vehicle stacking, containment ducting or a contractor’s filter inventory.
HEPA does not make the two product classes interchangeable
Both classes can use HEPA filtration. EPA explains HEPA using the common 99.97% at 0.3 micron reference point, and many consumer purifiers use HEPA because it is effective for fine particles. Restoration scrubbers also use HEPA, but their system design may include higher airflow, prefilters intended for heavy loading, duct connections and rugged housings.

Negative-air capability is the clearest practical separator
Many restoration air scrubbers can be ducted so filtered air is exhausted from a containment area. Dri-Eaz documents the HEPA 700 for negative- or positive-pressure setups, and XPOWER says the X-2480A outlet can be ducted to create negative air pressure. Consumer room purifiers normally recirculate air in the room and are not designed as containment exhaust machines.

Which is better for mold?
Neither product category “solves mold” by filtering air. EPA’s current guidance says portable air cleaners and HVAC filters do not address the moisture cause of mold and cannot replace mold cleanup. A restoration HEPA scrubber can still be useful during appropriate remediation work because it is designed for jobsite particle loading and may support containment/negative-air use.

Which is better for construction dust?
A commercial air scrubber is usually the more relevant equipment class when dust loading is heavy, the unit will be moved between jobs, prefilters need frequent attention, or the setup may use containment. XPOWER’s current X-2480A page specifically describes the machine for water-damage restoration and construction jobs, and Dri-Eaz markets the DefendAir 400 for cleaning, remodels and remediation.
A consumer purifier may still help with lighter ongoing dust in an occupied room, but using it as a construction/restoration machine can create filter-loading and durability issues it was not designed to solve.
Noise and appearance often matter more for consumer purifiers
A room purifier may run all day in a bedroom, office or living area, so sound, display brightness, aesthetics and sleep modes can strongly affect the purchase. Restoration scrubbers can also be used in occupied spaces, but their buying criteria more often prioritize jobsite airflow, pressure capability, filter access and transport.

When a consumer air purifier is the better choice
- You want ongoing filtration in a normally occupied room rather than temporary restoration work.
- You are sizing around a consumer CADR and room size rather than containment airflow.
- You do not need ducting, negative pressure, rugged stacking or repeated jobsite transport.
- Noise, sleep mode, display controls and household energy use are primary decision factors.
When a restoration air scrubber is the better choice
- The equipment will be used during restoration, remodeling, demolition or heavy-dust work.
- You need replaceable prefilters designed around higher particle loading.
- You may need ducting or a negative-air configuration.
- You need published amp draw and fleet electrical planning.
- You need stackable/rugged equipment that travels between jobs.
- You want filter part numbers, service documentation and commercial support resources.

Is an air scrubber the same as an air purifier?
No. The terms overlap around filtration, but restoration air scrubbers are generally jobsite machines designed for higher airflow, rugged transport, replaceable filter stacks and sometimes ducted negative-air use. Consumer air purifiers are generally designed for ongoing room-air cleaning.
Can I use a home air purifier instead of a restoration air scrubber?
For ordinary room-air cleaning, a correctly sized consumer purifier may be appropriate. For restoration containment, ducted negative air, repeated jobsite transport or professional filter handling, use equipment designed and documented for that purpose.
What is CADR and why do air purifiers use it?
