HEPA Air Scrubbers: Filtration, Filter Stages & Restoration Selection
A HEPA air scrubber should be compared as a filtration system, not just as a fan with a HEPA label. The useful differences are the manufacturer’s HEPA wording, prefilter design, carbon option, filter-change indication, airflow through the system, replacement-filter support and whether the machine can be ducted for the intended restoration setup.
What HEPA tells you—and what it does not
EPA describes HEPA as a pleated mechanical air filter that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns, the commonly referenced most-penetrating particle size. That definition is helpful for understanding the filtration concept, but a complete air-scrubber decision still includes the machine around the filter.
Restoration manufacturers may publish different efficiency wording because they are describing their own filter/media/test claims. Dri-Eaz currently states that the HEPA 700 and DefendAir HEPA 700 filter 99.99% of 0.1–0.5 micron particulates. XPOWER publishes 99.97% at 0.3 microns for the X-2480A HEPA stage. Do not compare HEPA percentages without the particle-size wording
A percentage alone can look like a simple score: 99.99 seems bigger than 99.97. But those figures are not necessarily describing the same test or particle-size range. The safer comparison is to record the published percentage together with the particle-size language and treat unknown test details as unknown.

Prefilter, HEPA and carbon stages have different functions

Two-stage, three-stage and four-stage do not form a universal quality ladder
More stages can be useful, but stage count alone does not prove a better machine. The Dri-Eaz HEPA 700 uses a two-stage standard configuration with a MERV 8 prefilter and primary HEPA filter, with optional carbon available. The XPOWER X-2480A uses three stages: washable nylon, pleated media and HEPA. The XPOWER X-3580 uses four stages, including two washable nylon filters, activated carbon and HEPA.
The X-3580’s four-stage design can be a sensible buying path when carbon filtration is part of the requirement. But a two-stage HEPA 700 may still be the better fit when higher static pressure, connected monitoring or a different fleet ecosystem matters more. Count the functions of the filters, not just the number of layers.

Filter availability can matter as much as the initial machine
A restoration scrubber is not a one-time purchase if it will be used repeatedly. The fleet needs replacement prefilters, primary HEPA filters and, when used, carbon media. Filter part numbers, pack sizes, replacement procedure and local availability can become operating-cost and downtime issues.
Dri-Eaz currently publishes replacement part numbers for the DefendAir 400: primary HEPA filter #111333 and prefilters #127974. Its filter page also states that those filters are designed to be replaced after use to help prevent cross-contamination rather than cleaned and reused. XPOWER publishes filter part numbers directly on its X-2480A and X-3580 product pages. Those details are more useful for a working fleet than a vague “washable filter” marketing phrase.
Filter loading changes the operating picture
As filters collect debris, resistance can increase. A filter-change light or pressure-based indicator can help the operator identify when the primary filter is becoming restricted. This is one reason published static pressure is useful: it gives more context for a machine that may be asked to move air through filters and ducting rather than operating in ideal free-air conditions.
Restoration Select will not estimate an undocumented “loaded-filter CFM.” If a manufacturer does not publish airflow at a specific resistance point, that value remains unknown.
Carbon is for a different problem than HEPA
EPA’s current air-cleaner guidance distinguishes particle filtration from gas/odor filtration and notes that activated carbon is used for gases rather than as a particle-rating system. That is the right way to interpret restoration scrubber options too. A carbon-equipped scrubber can be useful when odor or certain gaseous contaminants are part of the plan, but it does not become “more HEPA” because it has carbon.
For example, the XPOWER X-3580 includes an activated-carbon stage; the HEPA 700 supports an optional carbon filter; the HEPA Max 870 and 970 are sold in three-stage configurations that combine HEPA and activated-carbon filtration. Those are configuration differences, not a universal ranking.
HEPA filtration does not replace source control
EPA’s current consumer air-cleaner guidance emphasizes that filtration supplements source control and ventilation rather than replacing them. The same principle matters even more in restoration: a HEPA scrubber can capture airborne particles, but it does not remove wet drywall, correct a leak, clean contaminated materials or determine whether remediation is complete.
